September 15th 1997 GOH: Gordon Michael Woolvett and Nicole deBoer This chat was hosted by the Sci-Fi Channel and was posted on their website for a number of years, however sadly a couple of months ago in some wisdom they decided to take the transcript down. Thankfully, in some moment of inspiration at some point in time I took a back up copy of the transcript, simply copied and pasted into word and saved it in a folder as a 'just in case' backup.
So here it is, enjoy! © Sci-fi Channel Mission Genesis Cast Members Nicole deBoer & Gordon Michael Woolvett September 15, 1997 Moderator: OK, this is the way it works. Moderator: To ask a question to Gordon and Nicole, type "/msg Moderator" followed by your question. Moderator: Nicole, Gordon, any opening comments? NICOLE: hope i type fast enough GORDON: Just want to say thanks to everybody for watching NICOLE: kiss kiss gord Moderator: Ok, first question... GORDON: hug hug Moderator: to : Why is the show only a half hour when so much more could be done in an hour? NICOLE: my family asks the same thing GORDON: That's a good question. More time would be heaven NICOLE: moola? Moderator: to : Gordon, why is Reb the only one with a last name? NICOLE: ya i want one GORDON: He's the one who is from a time closest to ours today GORDON: A last name helps us identify with him... or not Moderator: to : Are there any other upcoming projects that Nicole and Gordon will be involved in? GORDON: We just did a movie together called... NICOLE: my date with the presidents daughter GORDON: We play Bonnie and Clyde type criminals NICOLE: I did a film called CUBE GORDON: It was a comedy for tv GORDON: She's such a square NICOLE: coming out next spring,,, yes scifi Moderator: to : My question is for both Nicole and Gordon...what else have you done? And what was your favorite "pre Genesis" role? NICOLE: bbbbhhhhlllllhhh GORDON: Wow, that's a hard question. I like playing bad guys, and I've been a few NICOLE: i guess... an Outer Limits I did,...or Catwalk was fun GORDON: ...but one of my favorite things was a hosting job I did for a wildlife show called "Wildside" GORDON: ...We went to Africa on safari for a few months. It was very cool Moderator: to : Question: Will there been any future romance between the Reb and Yuna Characters? GORDON: You'll have to tune in but... it does get interesting Moderator: to : Any romance between the actors themselves? NICOLE: sorry we were trying to think of a big lie to tell you NICOLE: thats what took so long GORDON: There's no time for that... we barely got any time to sleep NICOLE: no no romance Moderator: to : To either of you, where would you like to see your character go in the future? NICOLE: captain haha GORDON: I'd like to see them really break down. I like to see characters come back from duress. As for CAPTAIN... we all know who that is GORDON: Does anybody have any criticism or feedback? Moderator: to : Where is the show filmed? NICOLE: toronto Moderator: to : To either of you, has there been a fan club started for MG? GORDON: Moderator? NICOLE: i dont know, actually Moderator: A fan club is being formed as we speak... Moderator: Look for announcements on www.missiongenesis.com... Moderator: to : do either of you read science fiction, in particular the novels that the series is based GORDON: There are websites run by fans themselves GORDON: I haven't read the novels. But I'm a huge fan GORDON: My favorite author is Michael Moorcock NICOLE: I havent read the novels either Moderator: to : Will any other clones of the characters show up again in the series? GORDON: I don't know. But after I watched "Reflections" I saw Riker meet himself on STNG Moderator: to : Do either of you surf the web? GORDON: ...also, I think two 'Reb's are enough NICOLE: One yuna is enough i think....yes I have surfed GORDON: I don't have much time, but I do whenever I find myself in front of a computer Moderator: to : Are you like your characters in any way? GORDON: I have the same hair NICOLE: he 'thinks's hes always in charge...right Gor? NICOLE: d GORDON: Well "think" and "know" are often the same thing GORDON: hahaha GORDON: We do try to put a lot of ourselves into the roles NICOLE: i wear a lot of black and I like to be the one in the drivers seat GORDON: so often our characters take on aspects of us, instead of the reverse Moderator: to : Sci-fi often falls into two extremes. One side is filled with hope for the future and the other side is despair. Where do you think MG falls in this spectrum? GORDON: Despair with only hope to keep us going GORDON: I think Sci-fi has to achieve a balance of a both with possibly a little more emphasis on one Moderator: to : did you have any input on the character's devlopment? GORDON: We actually did. NICOLE: yes GORDON: We were lucky to have producers who gave us a lot of trust and control over our end of the production... I did however get told to back off from time to time GORDON: ...I can get a little enthusiastic about things sometimes! Moderator: to : There is great interaction among the characters. Is this the same among the actors? GORDON: I also write sci-fi, and I think that helped me understand and clarify alot of what I was saying NICOLE: there was always a lot of communication between the actors, the producers, and directors Moderator: to : What was the green stuff in Awakening really and how long did you have to slug around to film those scenes? NICOLE: it was aloe vera gel with a blue dye NICOLE: very cold, let me tell you GORDON: It took us days, we had to do re -shoots and then shoot other scenes in between NICOLE: but my skin was soooo soft afterward! NICOLE: Gord you lie! Moderator: to : Hey Gordon, how old were you when you were doing your YTV PJ gig? =D NICOLE: It was only a few hours for me NICOLE: still cold though GORDON: I was a few years younger than I am now NICOLE: hahaha Moderator: to : A question for Nicole! Can you discuss working on the OUTER LIMITS episode, "Quality of Mercy"? What did you think of the script and how was it working with Terminator II's Robert Patrick? (it's my fav OL of all the new shows!) GORDON: He couldn't get a word in edgewise NICOLE: I loved it because it was a very well written script and just two people trapped in a room?....a great challenge for an actor NICOLE: Robert was wonderful Moderator: to : What was your favorite Mission Genesis episode? NICOLE: Well he'll like his bigger episode and I GORDON: My favorite was Reflections. That older Reb was the nicest actor I've ever worked with NICOLE: will like mine cycles NICOLE: but I really like reflections too actually GORDON: ...but seriously, I liked Siege, it has some cool effects and a real good sense of being chased Moderator: to : do you think there could be a Mission Genesis movie in the future? GORDON: We'd need a lot more mmoney, so get your friends watching! GORDON: Actually a movie would be a great idea. As we said earlier, a half an hour just isn't enough to give a show like this a real good chance to show itself off Moderator: to : How has Mission Genesis been doing in the ratings? Is it likely to be renewed? GORDON: It's getting the response we had hoped for and people seem to be liking it GORDON: As for renewal... well we'll see... Moderator: to : Both of you: Whats your favorite scifi series? GORDON: You'd be surprised, often the actors are the last to know GORDON: Mine are Lost In Space, STNG... and of course Mission Genesis NICOLE: STNG and star Trek GORDON: I also loved a really bad scifi movie starring none other than... Charlton Heston called "Omega Man." Has anyone else seen it? NICOLE: i liked Logan's Run... Moderator: to : might there be an episode that will explain where, how, why the pandora virus started? Moderator: to : gordon, the omega man was on cable this last weekend GORDON: We're not sure. As the story goes it wiped us all out before we could learn anything about it. GORDON: Did you watch it, neelix? Moderator: to : wanted to but missed, think anohter show "beat it out" :-) Moderator: to : What do you like to do in your free time? GORDON: I don't know, I just think the idea of a bunch of bad zombies running around in sunglasses singing cheesy seventies tunes is just too cool NICOLE: what would you guys like to see happen on the show im curious GORDON: I'm a big snowboarder. I spent some time in New Zealand boarding on volcanoes-- too cool, no trees, great view- and I've been hooked ever since GORDON: Nicole spends hers dreaming of becoming captain NICOLE: you are too funny gord Moderator: to : I am a fan of MG, of course, and I know the fans have been trying to name themselves, like MGers. What would you name us fans as? NICOLE: gennies is kinda cute NICOLE: but maybe we dont want cute NICOLE: ummm..... NICOLE: clones is cooler Moderator: to : I think the crew should meet the Aliens they encounter in the first ep., find out why they hate the DWB. GORDON: What do you guys think would be good? What you think is more important, NICOLE: good point mssngen NICOLE: they 're jealous of our clothes Moderator: to : Nicole asked what we want to see.... this is what I want.....character development, character development, character development GORDON: We've established that there kind of like territorial animals, striking out instinctually... but meeting them and even forming an alliance so they could help us repopulate is a great idea NICOLE: yes, yes, yes,me too LWQuestie GORDON: I agree heartily... but a half hour is a half hour Moderator: to : Will there be a MG convention, or will you appear at a Star trek convention? GORDON: Love to NICOLE: I dont mind kicking the odd alien butt, but I'm very into the human interaction stuff NICOLE: i would Moderator: to : Has the crew explored the entire ship ? I f not is there anything you would like to discover ? GORDON: Yeah. I'd love to find a Ten'forward and a barber shop. But ther is a lot of undiscovered ship we don't even know how to get to. That would come second season NICOLE: you need a barber shop yellow head Moderator: to : I have a question...do you guys ever read the MG BBoard on this site? GORDON: thanks boy NICOLE: yes I have once GORDON: Me too. NICOLE: i thought it was very interesting...a lot of good points very constructive NICOLE: and supportive Moderator: to : Will the MG charactors find themselves questioning their mission to save Earth? GORDON: I'd love to see some more feed back. I can always hear more comments, they only help. NICOLE: i'm sure GORDON: Absolutely. Reb might even get tested... but you'll have to wait and see NICOLE: GORDON..... Moderator: to : Question: What did you think about the story of Mission Genesis when you were first approached to be a character on the show GORDON: Sorry. Not allowed to give anything away... NICOLE: I thought it had a lot of potential and originality with the cloning andprexing GORDON: I thought it was really unique. A new version of an old format. The clone concept gioves us room to go new places with our prexing Moderator: to : Are there any particular comments that were made that you felt will help you in the future? NICOLE: we are the same person Moderator: (I think that's RE: BBoard) NICOLE: stop copying me Gord! NICOLE: I want to kick Bren's butt too! GORDON: Yeah, but it's hard to listen to every single one.. but I guess sometimes I do look like a reject from a new wave band Moderator: to : It's not only the half-hour format that kinda impedes on the whole development thing, but don't you guys think that that the "G" rating kinda hinders a litlle bit as well? NICOLE: ya somene said I had to get off the juice or something....I think theyll find I calmd down a bit NICOLE: haha GORDON: unfortunately, cloning in our version of the future isn't perfect, that's why we have odd hair coloring and things like that. I've read comments about that. NICOLE: I like when they make fun of our hair GORDON: The "g" rating allows for more people to watch it and not be offended. GORDON: ...I don't think the rating of our show hinders... NICOLE: I think it has to lean one way or the other personally GORDON: I think the rest of TV is just to violent, and we are all desensitized because of it Moderator: to : gordon you mention that you write sci fi, anything published? If so what and where? Moderator: We're going to wrap it up soon, so fans, please send your final questions now GORDON: Nothing published yet, but I've written two screenplays. One's called "Tantalus" Moderator: to : hey...anybody know where we can get merchandise?!?! GORDON: I've got some interest but no deals yet. GORDON: I don't know if any has come out yet Moderator: (we hear that within the next two months, there will be MG merchandise available: check www.missiongenesis.com for more info) Moderator: to : Which MG charecter is better? Reb or Yuna? NICOLE: ooohhh GORDON: We like to actually call the two characters "Rebyuna" GORDON: ...although that sounds like a soft drink Moderator: to : Would either of you like to direct the show? GORDON: Sometimes I do GORDON: just kidding NICOLE: i think we both would but Gord is more ready for it at this time Moderator: ok thank you both Moderator: we'll open up the room now so everyone can say goodbye Moderator: any final farewells Gordon and Nicole? NICOLE: I just want to say thanks for watching and for all the great input and support on the boards.I've never done one of these for a show before and I had a lot of fun GORDON: Yeah, thanks alot everybody, one note: on set we called ourselves DWEEBS: for Deep Water Black (DWB) the name of our ship, so maybe that would be a funny but cool nick name NICOLE: oh gord Moderator: ok thanks all, here are your fans: Swooop: Thanks for coming Nicole and Gordon.
