Murder, Theft, Engine Trouble... Clutch is the dark tale of a conflicted thief, Martyn who botches the theft of a rare book, inadvertently killing a man in the process. Managing to get away, Martyn asks his friends to help him by taking care of the body while he delivers the book. Naturally, things go wrong en route, and Martyn finds himself indebted to a beautiful mechanic, Theresa, who just happens to also have another connection to this series of events.
Review
From the offset this is a stylish film, that throws you immediately into the action after a fast paced intro. It's one of those rare films that you can watch time and again and still pick up on something you hadn't noticed before, almost making you compelled to watch it again. The plot is not straight forward, and I sense it's not supposed to be, and the comedy pushes into the dark areas and in places the visuals are amusing.
Gordon Woolvett plays Spit, a supporting role and probably one of the best he's been given in a film to date that I have seen. He seems to be enjoying every scene, playing a laid back, irresponsible young adult who surfs the net all day for porn or instructions for devices to inflict pain. His character gets given the task of disposing of the body, and teaming up with the brother of the murderer, they both almost steal the film from the main two with their scenes of discussing rights and wrongs and attempts to deal with the disposal.
I can't quite explain why I love this film, probably because all the performances are solid and enjoyable to watch - David Hewlett as Martyn is perfect and his scenes with Theresa's father really show off his comic timing and talent. For GMW fans, this film is a must watch if you can find a copy which is a rare thing, this film deserves a dvd release, especially with Hewletts new found popularity! The scene in the church alone is one of my favourite GMW screen moments so far!
